Hives

Here's a question for you reader(s)...

Why, after five months of sharing my bed and increasingly scratched-up sofa with him, has my little Boxerbeast started to make me itchy every time he licks me? This morning he woke me up by enthusiastically lapping at my face and within five minutes I looked like Macaulay Culkin in My Girl.

Any ideas? Because right now my only solution is to trim an eyehole out of my pillowcase and shroud my head John Merrick-style before heading to work.

This is quite possibly the most plausible explanation. It also explains why my trachea closes every time I watch "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition". Oh, and why I'm so alone. Urticaria lines the bottom of the turn-on pile, sandwiched between "surly" and "refuses to chew with mouth closed".

You must be sensitive/allergic to something in his saliva. If it never bothered you before, it's either a new allergy forming, or there's something different about his saliva that's bothering you. You may need to look into it if it gets worse.

Benedryl...you'll be foggy and groggy at work, but it's better than hives........maybe........??

Do you have other airborne allergies? Maybe your body is uber sensitive to allergens right now and you have a minor allergy to dogs.......and it's flaring up because you are reacting to OTHER stuff as well....???

Other than that...I dunno......

It could be something he had eaten or rolled in. My sister's dog always gets into poison ivy and then I end up with the rash.

You have become allergic to his saliva, it's not uncommon to all of a sudden develop allergies. That, or he has skanky death mouth that is eating away your skin.

Brushing a dog's teeth is cruel and unusual punishment for everyone involved but maybe that's a start? He might just need a bacteria cleanse to get him back on the straight-and-narrow...mouth-wise.

oh no, you've developed an allergy to your pup! i suggest getting to the doctor tout de suite. i have plenty of friend who are hopped up on pills every day just so they can keep their pets.

jb: Yeah, this is totally new. Someone suggested that it could be his diet, which has changed as he's moved away from the prescription food. And also we both eat a lot of mini-hot dogs.

shelly: Good call on the other allergies. I go through about a gallon of Visine a day, ever since the trees started dropping their yellow dander all over everything.

tara: I thought about that, but it's definitely coming from his mouth. We can sit and snuggle all day (we love the "Mystery Diagnosis" marathons on D-Health) and I'm totally fine.

dutchess: Hmm... at the very least "Skanky Death Mouth" is going to be the name of my band.

ben: Good idea! I actually own a puppy toothbrush. I think it's in my suitcase.

notsojenny: I'll be making an allergy appt immediately after I look up what "tout de suite" means.

kaeti: FTW.

God damn it. You made me have to go out and look up a word ('Urticaria'). Screw you for making me learn stuff.

I was allergic to our puppy when we first got him. He'd lick me all over and I'd go crazy itching and my skin would get splotchy. It has seemed to go away though, because now he licks me and it's fine. So maybe you'll adapt too?

surviving: My most recent exes, my neighbors, my boss, the customers, bank tellers...

justins: I SWEAR the learnin' won't happen again. Not here.

glamorous152: I hope so. I also hope I'll adapt to his sudden urge to put my whole head in his mouth around 5:20 a.m.

That's so strange...How come it's just started now, is what I would want to know, you know. That's SO crazy!

I can totally relate! My boxer-boy Charlie leave little hives on me even if he rubs up on me…most of the time. I just love him so much, I have learned to live with it! He still sleeps with me all the time!

I read all the posts from the most recent to this one. I hope you make it far in the arts and crafts. I'd definitely be a fan. Perhaps that would defeat the loneliness. I hope.

Oh, and I don't know. The same with me: some dogs' fur makes me itchy and some doesn't. I agree with JB all the way up top, I think you should look into it.
